Review
Small Plates is located in the heart of downtown Detroit. As the name suggests, the restaurant serves modest portions of food on small plates which encourages patrons to share and provides them the opportunity to taste a wide variety of dishes. The experience makes it a great place to go with a party of 4 to 6 people to get a good sampling of the menu’s offerings.
Small Plates feels like a cool place to hang out. The decor is a bit funky and eclectic with a metallic colour scheme and graffiti art on the walls. The restaurant itself isn’t large. There are just enough tables to keep the place full, and a large bar for indulging in their drinks menu which offers local beers and wines as well as interesting cocktails.
We came here for brunch on a Sunday morning before the Lions game so we can’t speak about the main menu other than to say that with offerings like duck & pork empanadas and mini Detoit-style coneys we’ll be back to give it a try. The brunch menu covered every option you could want on a Sunday morning from sweet and savoury breakfast items to panini and pizzas. They even offer bottomless mimosas and a very cool make-your-own bloody mary bar with top shelf vodka and all the cocktail fixin’s. We ordered 2 dishes per person. Most of the dishes were flavourful and fantastic, the egg dishes needed salt but overall we enjoyed everything we ordered and even ordered seconds!
If you’re looking for a fun atmosphere or if you’re too indecisive to choose a single menu item at a regular restaurant or if you’re willing to share your food, Small Plates is the perfect dining option.
Diner’s Favourites:
Pretzel Sliders – Tiny but oh-so-juicy beef burgers topped with onions, cheese, and bacon on a little pretzel bun.
Crabcakes Benedict – Using crab cakes as a base for eggs benedict? Genius. Especially when the crab cakes are delicious as these.
Diner’s Thoughts:

The Bloody Mary bar looked really tempting but I’m glad I stuck with cappuccino because it was really good. Like, write about it on your food blog good.
My menu picks were two egg dishes, huevos rancheros and frittata. They weren’t as good as I was hoping they’d be. Both were a bit under-salted. I loved the crab cakes benedict and the croque monsieur was one of my favourite dishes made with all kinds of bad-for-you tastiness.
This seems like a great place to go for a double date and I’d really love to come back for dinner to sample from their main menu

This restaurant has a couple of things going for it. First, the menu is based off of areas in Detroit, so you’ll have sliders and mini hot dogs representing the sports teams, while fish tacos represents Mexican Town. Second, the drink menu is very sophisticated – Dragonmead Eric the Red, anyone?
The pretzel sliders were phenomenal! Many of the other items on their menu were very good including the Croque Monsieur and the Chicken & Mushroom Crepes. We also had a brick oven pizza that really fell flat – a non-crisp crust that cannot be approved by us “South-Detroiters” (aka, Windsorites). The other problem we had with the brunch was that the 2 out of 2 egg dishes weren’t seasoned at all. Next time, I’m coming back for the full menu – look out ribs, here I come!
Recommendation: The pretzel sliders were so good we ordered 3 plates of them for 4 people, and I might have had a plate all to myself. If I were to come back here, it would definitely be for happy hour since their drink selection was amazing.

I recommend coming here. The food is really different, in a good way, and they have some really good happy hour specials if you can make it here early.
The crabcakes benedict was my favourite dish on the brunch menu.

I’ve been here for dinner and now for brunch as well. I just love this place! You have to try it! I can’t get enough of the pretzel sliders, but the Detroit-style coney dogs that are on the main menu are my absolute favourite dish.
And how unique is this Bloody Mary bar? I loved it.
